About the Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) The Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) is open to all AKC parent clubs that request to be included in the program. In January 2006, the Boykin Spaniel was admitted into the CHIC database. A CHIC number does not indicate that the dog necessarily passed the tests involved; it only signifies that the owner took the responsible steps needed to determine or not there is disease present. CHIC is meant to encourage health testing to reduce the incidence of genetic disease. CHIC numbers will be automatically generated for all Boykin Spaniels meeting health testing requirements and having permanent ID (tattoo or microchip). Dogs having CHIC numbers will be listed on the OFA database with the CHIC logo which is linked to their information on the CHIC database. Since CERF, OFA and CHIC have worked to have compatible databases, they are able to instantaneously share the electronic records to create the most extensive dog health database in the world. Other hip testing means such as PENNHip may be used; however, there may be a small additional charge for the manual processing to include those results in the database. OFA supplies information to the AKC for inclusion in their database in this joint venture between the two major organizations. Clubs participating in the Purina Pro Club Partnership Program support the CHIC by donating half of all monies earned to AKC/CHF, which in turn co-sponsors the CHIC database along with OFA. At this time, both the Boykin Spaniel Society and the Boykin Spaniel Club of America participate and contribute to the Purina Pro Club Partnership Program to help fund this endeavor. |
