Boykin Spaniel Clubs
There are several types of clubs for Boykin Spaniel
enthusiasts. Clubs can be national or regional (local)
organizations and their purpose for existing can differ greatly.
AKC refers to regional groups as "local clubs". In AKC local
clubs are bound by the rules of AKC. AKC will only allow a local
club where there is significant member support in the area. The
parent club plays no part in the local club with one exception;
AKC requires that the local club get permission from the
national parent club for the date of any conformation shows
before the local club gets permission from AKC to host the show.
Local clubs often host events in their area which make the
events available to more people throughout the country. No AKC
local clubs will be able to host AKC events until the breed is
formally recognized and the national parent club moves forward
in their sanctioning process.

to suit the interests of their members. Their goals include
becoming an AKC breed.
In January 2007 the AKC minutes reflect that: "Boykin Spaniel: David Roberts and
Mari-Beth O’Neill, AKC Staff, were present for part of the
meeting. The Board reviewed a staff report recommending the
Boykin Spaniel Club & Breeders Association of America as the
parent club to represent the Boykin Spaniel. Staff also
recommends that the breed advance to the Miscellaneous Class
effective January 1, 2008. This will be reviewed further at the
