Boykin Spaniel Eye Health
Eye problems are one of
the most often seen genetic ailments seen in this breed. "
Corneal dystrophy-epithelia/stromal" and "Eyelids"&
Eyelids, distichiasis" are the two most common reported
findings in the OFA database for CERF. "Vitreous", "Fundus,
retinal dysplasia-folds", "lens, punctate cataract",
"iris, persistent pupillary membranes - iris to iris" are
also listed in the database.
While some eye problems
may cause pain or blindness, other problems are not as
damaging. The American
College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) lists
common articles and descriptions of
common diseases and surgeries as well as a
comprehensive directory of board certified
ophthalmologists. ACVO also makes recommendations on which
eye diseases should eliminate a dog from a breeding
program and which ones may be considered "breeder's
choice" to keep the individual as breeding stock.
Canine Eye Registry
Foundation
The Canine Eye Registry
Foundation (CERF) is the certification for good eye
health. Certificate is valid for 1 year as eye problems
can develop quickly at any age. Breeding stock should be
tested throughout their adult life to ensure that vision
problems do not appear that may be passed onto their
offspring.
CERF has agreed to allow
the OFA to display some of its data to help breeders
locate important screening information with less effort.
They maintain their own website address at
www.vmdb.org/cerf.html Parent Breed clubs may apply
for membership in CERF which provides them with the
semi-annual newsletter, registration report for 1 breed,
research breakdown report for 1 breed and permission to
publish copyrighted reports.
