Boykin Spaniel Health

*NEWS FLASH*

Exercise Induced Collapse (EIC) is found to be the culprit for decades old unsolved "mystery" problem dating back to the BSS foundation lines.

Boykins affected may become unsteady on their feet to the point of their legs collapsing out from underneath them. EIC is a genetic disorder passed down through a gene from both the sire and dam of affected dogs.

Often mislabeled as seizures, EIC can now be positively identified with a University of MN DNA test. Click here for more info: http://boykinspanielclub.org/health.html

OFA will track DNA samples in their database; search for responsible breeders who have tested their dogs at : www.OFFA.org

Boykin Spaniel Health

The Boykin Spaniel is an active, enthusiastic breed that has a "put me in coach" outlook on life. However, they need good conformation and genetic health to be able to physically continue to keep up with their great attitude.

Hip dysplasia and eye problems may be considered the most common ailments in Boykin Spaniels. However, reports of heart disease, elbow dysplasia and patellar luxation are known.

Being a responsible, intelligent breeder is an ongoing process of continued education in canine health and genetics. New studies and testing methods are developed from breakthrough research that improves the ability to test for genetic diseases. The breeders who care for the future of a breed will invest time and money into the litters they produce to carry on the  bloodlines of the breed.

With this in mind, all Boykin Spaniel owners need to share the health conditions (good and bad) with the rest of the community. These pages are not to call out any issues or breeders, but rather to inform and document problems that owners, prospective owners and breeders need to be aware of.

The blue navigation bones indicate subcategories of interest as well as a few of the known problems in the breed. If you feel there is a subcategory of importance not listed here, please email us on the  feedback form with your suggestions. We would also like to hear about the health of YOUR Boykin Spaniel!

Send us an email on the feedback form to tell us about your experience with Boykin Spaniel health. Your report will help the future of the breed by assisting in the documentation process of known and unknown health problems in this breed.
