Junior Showmanship
Junior Showmanship (Jrs) is the classification for
several programs under different organizations. In conformation
events, usually Jrs. is a separate class in which the dog is not
judged but the manner in which the handler is able to show and
demonstrate that they know information about the care and breed
traits of their dog. In other events they are usually graded on the
same scale as all other competitors but may garner special
recognition awards or accumulate points for year-end competitions.
The Jrs. programs allow children to earn self-esteem, consider a
future career in dogs, earn scholarships for college education and
socialize with children who enjoy dogs as much as they do. Currently
the largest 2 kennel clubs in the US offer Junior Showmanship
programs. Boykin Spaniels can currently compete in UKC events, while
the AKC site offers extensive information for Juniors who are
considering this event.
