Skin (Dermalogical) Diseases
Skin "problems" have been reported
in several articles; however, no record of the cause of these
problems is stated in the corresponding articles. The skin
problems that have been reported to this website's author have
been itchy skin and/or loss of coat with no cause diagnoses by
their respective vets. In one case the loss of coat was in an
adult dog with a hypothyroid problem and this sometimes causes
skin problems.
It is not unusual for other spaniel
breeds to have skin problems related to hypothyroidism. Should
your spaniel has skin problems and an abnormal thyroid blood
panel the endocrine system could be a cause of the skin
problems. Managing the thyroid level with a synthetic
replacement may correct the problem.
Other skin problems may be related
to allergies or infestations. Have your vet examine the problem
and do a "skin scrape" to determine if there is an underlying
bacterial or infestation that is not visible to the human eye.
If your Boykin is experiencing skin
problems we'd like to know about it! Please email us with your
dog's name, pedigree if known, age (approximate if not known)
and any other health history that may be relevant on our
contact form. We would like to
document as many cases as possible to try to isolate the
reported skin problem causes for the benefit of all Boykin
Spaniels. |
