Teeth Alignment in the Boykin
Spaniel
Incorrect bite alignment, called malocclusion, can interfere
with a Boykin's ability to grasp and carry objects. This is
unacceptable in a retrieving breed. It is not considered a
"common" problem in the breed; however there have been regularly
occurring instances of this and the nature of such a physical
problem in a retrieving breed should be noted.
A dog's bite alignment is determined by where the upper and
lower incisor teeth meet when the mouth is closed. When teeth do
not line up properly they may rub and wear against one another
or damage other soft areas of the mouth. Malocclusion is
hereditary and Boykin Spaniels with incorrect bites should be
removed from the breeding program.
The most commonly seen malocclusion in Boykin Spaniels is the
undershot jaw. In an undershot jaw the
lower jaw protruding beyond the upper jaw as seen in some
shorter-nosed breeds such as Bulldogs or Boxers. |
