United Kennel Club (UKC)
The United Kennel Club (UKC) is an
all-breed registry founded by Chauncey
Z. Bennett in 1898. The UKC states that
Bennett formed the club in order to
provide a registry for working dogs;
others claim that it was originally
formed so that the founder could
register his American Pit Bull Terrier,
Bennett's Ring.
UKC is the 2nd
largest registering organization in the United States and
register more than 300 breeds of dog. UKC is a privately owned
company; current owner and president is Wayne R. Cavanaugh. The
organization is centered in Kalamazoo, MI. and supports the
concept "total dog", meaning a dog that looks and performs
equally well.
REGISTRATION
UKC registration is
open to all Boykin Spaniels who can proof of pedigree as defined
by UKC. There has been some confusion and incorrect information
passed around the Boykin Spaniel community regarding the UKC's
criteria which has perpetuated the rumors into a life of their
own. Before accepting any rumors as fact,
refer to UKC
directly for their criteria.
UKC also offers the Limited Privilege Listing
(LP) program. It is open to spayed or neutered mixed bred dogs,
and purebred dogs of unknown pedigree. All LP-listed Boykin
Spaniels and Boykin mix breeds are eligible for
Agility, Obedience, Weight Pull, and Hunting
Retriever events.
The Boykin Spaniel
is registered and shown in the Gundog Group. They have been
registered by the UKC since 1985 and their standard can be found
