Weight Pull CompetitionsWeight Pull Events are enjoyed by all breeds of dog. It is a historical element in some breed's development, such as sledding dogs. There is significant concern for injury, especially to young dogs who have not physically matured. Great care should be taken in training and only after a full exam by a veterinarian. The dogs are scored by the amount of weight pulled and by the proportion of weight pulls in comparison to their body weight. The weighted sled is pulled a prescribed distance by calling the dog to you while you stand outside the dog's working area. No toys or food may be used to bride the dog to you. The dog pulls the sled by wearing a harness and the vehicle is either mounted on wheels, on snow or on a rail system. Weight pull has been the center of a fair amount of controversy in the Boykin Spaniel breed. Contrary to reports, weight pull is not an AKC event. AKC does not sanction weight pull and there is no group applying for it to be a sanctioned event at this time. This piece of misinformation has been used a ploy by individuals needing to invent reasons for the Boykin not to become AKC recognized. Organizations that do sanction weight pull events are the UKC(www.ukcdogs.com/dogevents/rules/w-index.shtml) and the International Weight Pull Association (www.iwpa.net) . It should be further noted that those individuals who opposed the Boykin Spaniel's advancement into AKC have not taken any action to stand behind their verbal assaults against weightpull. On the contrary, they continue to support the organizations sanctioning the events (UKC). |
